Soroptimist International of Suburban Essex(SISE), Neighbor

For almost 70 years, Soroptimist International of Suburban Essex (the local chapter of Soroptimist International of the Americas) has participated in many local projects and community partnerships. We have joined with the National Council of Jewish Women in projects protecting youth from violence through our “Loves Me, Loves Me Not” bookmark initiative. We have been in partnership with SAVE (Sexual Assault and Violence Education) of Essex County supplying personal care items and supporting the work of the sexual assault response teams. We have partnered with the St. Vincent Academy, Marylawn of the Oranges Academy, Grandma K.A.R.E.S., and many other organizations in Essex County that support women and girls. Our Just Cause Project was developed in 2013, when we partnered with St. Barnabas Medical Center to collect and distribute wigs, hats and headscarves to women undergoing treatment for cancer. This program developed into raising funds for the patients to receive assistance with transportation and shopping. Our most constant program, HUGS, supplies women escaping domestic violence with basic essentials when they enter emergency shelter through the YWCA of Eastern Union County.

We have unique awards programs: the Live Your Dream Award; the Ruby Award; the Violet Richardson Award. Each of these programs recognizes and helps support women in education and/or community service, and honors their ability to make a difference in their lives, and the lives of other women.
