Fans of 'Kai the Hitchhiker' Attempting to Raise $3M in Bail Money

One man is hoping fans will open their wallets to fund the defense of an Internet celeb accused in the murder of Clark resident Joseph Galfy.

Will fans of 'Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitcher' stand by him now that the Internet celeb has been arrested for the murder of Clark's Joseph Galfy? At least one fan is, and he's asking other supporters of Kai (whose real name is Caleb Lawrence McGillvary) to open their wallets to fund his $3 million bail and the cost of his legal defense. Galfy, 73, was found in his Clark home on Monday morning after hosting McGillvary, 24, overnight on Saturday and Sunday. Police say that McGillvary murdered Galfy, who was found in his underwear and socks, severely beaten. McGillvary was arrested in Philadelphia on Thursday night. For his part, in a Tuesday post on his Facebook page, McGillvary alleges that he was drugged and raped, and asks readers, "…

Whitney Houston's Body Returned to New Jersey

Whitney Houston is finally home. The singer's body was returned to her native Newark shortly before midnight Monday amid a throng of screaming fans who waited hours for the hearse to arrive at Whigham Funeral Home. Surrounded by heavy police presence, a gold-colored car with blacked out windows dropped off Houston's casket, concealed by a white tent, at a back entrance off Shipman Street. Houston's mother, Cissy, and other family members were seen filing into the funeral home about 15 minutes before the hearse arrived. Houston, who was found dead at age 48 inside a Beverly Hills hotel room Saturday, was flown from California to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey for the wake and public memorial that may be held in Newark later this week. BERKELEY HEIGHTS/MOUNTAINSIDE On a routine patrol through the Watchung Reservation on Thursday, at 5:30 p.m., a Union County police officer spotted an empty alarm-company truck parked near Surprise Lake in the Watchung Reservation. The truck was open, with the driver's personal belongings in full view. Almost three hours later, when the driver had not returned, three officers and the Canine Unit of the Union County Sheriff's department began a search for the driver, who emerged from the woods at 9:30 p.m. stating that he had gone for a walk and got lost in the dark. NJ to Assess Union County Storm Damage

Two months after Hurricane Irene, county is among 10 that could qualify for federal aid for Oct. 29 snowstorm.

Beginning today, Union County will be among 10 storm-damaged counties studied by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. According to an annoucement from the Office of Gov. Chris Christie, the conditions of the Oct. 29 surprise snowstorm that led the governor to declare a state of emergency for the entire state on the day of the storm. The joint preliminary damage assessments also will be conducted in Bergen, Essex, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties.  The assessment process is used to determine the impact and magnitude of damage caused by a disaster. It summarizes needs of residents, businesses, and the community as a whole. Westfield's Digiplex Rialto will host a three-day cinephile celebration of independent films, Q&As with stars and directors.

In 1989, Robert DeNiro (you may have heard of him) and his business partner, Jane Rosenthal, founded Tribeca Productions Film Studio. Their goal was to foster filmmaking projects in New York City. They continued to grow the business throughout the five boroughs. But in 2002, they had a grander plan.
