An early morning water main break in Scotch Plains on Tuesday sent waves of water surging through neighborhood streets and causing low water pressure in Scotch Plains, Fanwood and surrounding towns. Crews removed the broken 18-foot length of the 48-inch water main on Tuesday and a new pipe was in place late Wednesday night. Water pressure was restored earlier, however, by rerouting service. Clean up and repair of local streets continues. Meanwhile, residents whose basements were flooded reported that both their home insurers and NJ American Water said they would not pay for property damage. Countywide A fire at a commercial roofing company on Rte. 22 in Union closed the roadway for hours on Friday, backing up traffic. Exploding gas tanks on the scene caused the Union Township Fire Department to call in the County Hazmat team. A column of smoke could be seen from neighboring town. No injuries were reported. Countywide Seventy law enforcement officers from four counties — incuding Union — arrested 24 individuals Friday morning in a drug, gang and weapons sweep that began with an investigation into an attempted murder in Morristown last fall. Clark-Garwood Friends Remember Matt Kent, who was found dead last week, talked with Patch about Kent's struggle with prescription drug addiction. Each week, Patch takes a look back at the news in Union County for the past week. Countywide Hot on the heals of the U.S. News & World Report rankings, Newsweek released its list of the best public high schools in the country, and Union County high schools did quite well. New Providence ranked 224 and Governor Livingston High came in at 498 out of the 1,000 schools that made the grade. Elsewhere around Union County's public schools, Elizabeth High School ranked 217, Summit ranked 251, Cranford ranked 279, Westfield High ranked 352, Jonathan Dayton ranked 584, A.L.
