Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. AAA: New Jersey Travel Projected to Remain Stable, Sandy’s Impact Unknown

AAA projections made before Sandy; impact of extreme weather on holiday travel unclear.

The following is a press release from the New Jersey branch of the American Automobile Association. ------------- The AAA projects over one million New Jerseyans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. While the 43.3 million traveling nationwide represents a small but continued increase, New Jersey numbers have remained stable. The 2012 Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25. ShopRite Lowers Spending Threshold to Get Free Turkeys

It used to be $400. But because of Hurricane Sandy, all you have to do is spend $300 by November 22, and you can get a free turkey for your holiday table.

It's all to help people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. ShopRite has lowered the amount shoppers must spend in order to qualify for a free Thanksgiving turkey, according to Supermarket News.  The traditional ShopRite turkeyfest happens once a year. During that time, shoppers who spend a certain amount of money can pick up a free turkey for their Thanksgiving table. This year, the supermarket recognizes that people who were affected by the recent hurricane probably didn't have food shopping on their minds - especially with areas of central New Jersey not having electricity, in some cases, for more than a week. The free turkey threshold was $400. ShopRite has changed that to $300, Supermarket News reports. The promotion, which runs from …

Company's Coming? Here's an Hors D'oeuvre for That

Parmesan puffs for now and to freeze for later

As we bid farewell to Thanksgiving, we welcome with open arms the "silly season." You know, a few weeks of mad shopping, parties and revelry followed by Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year's Eve.  It's the party season at full tilt and it's fun as long as you're organized.   Taking that first step to managing all the silliness is having an hors d'oeuvre in the freezer that's ready to go. We're not talking pigs-in-a-blanket from Costco. Don't waste your freezer space unless it's catering-quality homemade yet easy, unfussy and tasty. Parmesan puffs are just the ticket. It's amazing what a few well chosen ingredients can do: Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, a small onion and thin sandwich bread. These four flavors create an addicting little bite. …

Turkey Day Leftovers Without Reinventing the Wheel

Thanksgiving shepherd's pie making the memory last a little longer

Let's face it, the day after Thanksgiving is not a day for cooking.  In fact it's hard to muster up any energy at all in the kitchen.  But chances are the fridge is stuffed with leftovers, so why not do the most logical thing?  Put it all together in a casserole and enjoy that Thanksgiving feast one more time. Shepherd's pie is nothing new and this is hardly a recipe.  The Shepherds' knew what they were talking about back in the 1800s .  It originated as a dish using up leftover meat with a mashed potato crust on top.  The dish is still very relevant today especially after Thanksgiving.   For those who like a little of everything on turkey day, this is Thanksgiving all over again but it can eaten it in front of the game (or the shows you …

One of my family's favorites is a Gobbler Sandwich. Two slices of Italian sliced bread, a light smear of mayo, turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Squish the sandwich down and toast on a frying pan or panini press. Served with a glass of apple cider and it's Thanksgiving all over again.   more ›

A Last-Minute Recipe for the Thanksgiving Rush

This orange and spice cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving will brighten up your table.

Too busy to read this because you're too busy cooking? No worries. This quickie recipe for homemade cranberry sauce can be made in 10 or 15 minutes with minimal fuss and absolutely no hassle. Given to me years ago by my good friend Lorraine Bowyer, I now make a double batch every year at Thanksgiving. The combination of the tart cranberries and orange rind with the warm spices of cinnamon and cloves makes for a very popular dish at the table.   Last minute cooking has its benefits too. Since they are home from school, get the kids involved in the kitchen. They can measure the ingredients, peel the orange and stick the whole cloves in the peel (and snack on the orange while they work). Fresh cranberry sauce is a fast fix and it's done …
