This release was provided by the Garwood Police Department. April 30, 1:52 a.m. – Sgt. Rocco and P.O. Czachorowski were on patrol when they observed a beige Toyota Corolla heading east on the 100 block of North Avenue cross over the double yellow lines. The officers initiated a motor vehicle stop and the investigation found that the driver, Michael Dippolito, 22, from Westfield, was operating the car under the influence of alcohol. Dippollito was placed under arrest and transported to HQ where he was processed and charged with DWI (driving while intoxicated) and other motor vehicle summons. Andrew Horan and Christopher Czachorowski are lateral transfers from the Union County Sheriff's Department and Hudson County Sheriff's Department.
At Tuesday's Garwood Council meeting, two newly hired officers for the Garwood Police Department were sworn in. Andrew Horan and Christopher Czachorowski are lateral transfers from the Union County Sheriff's Department and Hudson County Sheriff's Department, respectively. Horan lives in Kenilworth and served in the Army. Czachorowski lives in Clark and previously worked alongside his wife, Cheryl, who is a Sergeant with the Hudson County Sheriff's Department.

We knew this was not going to be easy from the onset. At the PCM (Pre-Construction Meeting) last year there was never any mention of shutting down the roadway entirely. As with past projects, it was expected that one lane would be left open in each direction while the other was being worked on. The possibility of working at night was discussed, however this is not the Counties normal practice for their projects and we were told that work would be performed during the day. Delays stagnated the project and Hurricane Sandy terminated it for the year 2012. …

Quick work by the Garwood Police Department, with the assistance of the U.S. Secret Service, led to the arrest of a Pennsylvania man shopping with counterfeit money in the Garwood Mall on South Avenue. After investigating, police determined that the man was in possession of $5,400 in counterfeit $50 bills. According to police, Officer Joseph Ostrander responded to a report of a suspicious individual who attempted to pass a counterfeit $50 in Game Stop on Tuesday, April 2, around 1 p.m. According to police reports, Ostrander observed a male fitting the suspect's description exiting the GNC vitamin shop when he arrived on the scene. Longtime Garwood Police Officer Joseph Wilds passed away on Friday, March 29, after battling stage four esophageal cancer. On Friday, the flags at Garwood's borough hall flew at half-staff to mark his passing. The Garwood PBA had recently organized a benefit for Wilds set for April 4 at the Westwood at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to that event, the A Night For Joe benefit fund. On March 16 into the early morning hours of March 17, a DWI (driving while intoxicated) checkpoint was conducted on South Avenue at the border between Garwood and Westfield. Westfield Police Chief David Wayman states that with the approval of Garwood Police Chief Bruce Underhill the checkpoint was conducted as a joint agency operation. The checkpoint resulted in the arrest of five individuals; two were arrested for DWI, they were Marlene Andrews, age 49 of Roselle and Mark Boyle, age 26 of Westfield. Garwood Police have arrested Jamie Knack, 24, of Clark for robbing the North Avenue 7-Eleven at knifepoint and later falsely reporting that she herself was mugged. According to police, around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Knack approached one of the 7-Eleven employees and told him that she had a knife and demanded that he open the cash register. The employee opened the register and Knack took approximately $500 in cash, then fled the location. While the patrol units were at the 7-Eleven, another armed robbery was reported approximately 15 minutes later on the 300 block of Second Avenue. Garwood Police are investigating an armed robbery that occured at the 7-Eleven at 309 North Avenue in the Garwood Plaza shopping area around 10 p.m. Saturday. According to unconfirmed reports, a suspect held up the convenience store at knife point before fleeing. Minutes later, police were made aware of a second robbery victim across the street from the store with injuries to her face. A county K-9 unit was called in but lost the suspect's scent. Lt. Doug Stoffer told Patch the following: "At this time we can only confirm that an armed robbery occured at the 7-11 and another report of an armed robbery occured shortly after. This release was provided by the Garwood Police Department. Feb. 6, 6:49 p.m. – Officer Jeff Kleinsorgen responded to the area of the 500 block of South Avenue on a report of an erractic driver. After a motor vehicle stop was initiated, the investigation found that the driver, Richard Weinberger, 49, of Parlin, was driving under the influence of narcotics. Weinberger was placed under arrest, processed and released with a pending court date.

This release was provided by the Garwood Police Department. Feb. 2, 9:54 p.m. – While on patrol, Officer Todd Herz conducted a motor vehicle stop which resulted in the driver, Anthony Jackson, 31, of Plainfield, being placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Further investigation found that that Jackson was in possession of marijuana (under 50 grams) and a passenger in the motor vehicle (Darryl Kennedy, 32, of Plainfield) was also charged with having an open container of alcohol. Jackson and Kennedy were charged, processed and released with a court date.
