On Thursday, May 16th, at 7:00 PM, noted New Jersey photographer Walter Choroszewski will present a program at the Garwood Public Library entitled “Photo tips for better pix”. Mr. Choroszewski has been the primary photographer of the New Jersey state tourism campaigns through the 1980’s and 90’s, and he continues to supply the state with his stock photos even today. Throughout his career, Mr. Choroszewski has photographed and produced 17 photographic books and numerous wall calendars. Terracycle started in Princeton, originally recycling earthworm waste into a natural plant food. They’ve since expanded their outreach to organizations, nationwide, to help clean up the environment.

In addition to clean, empty dairy tubs and lids (yogurt, butter, cream cheese, etc.), the following items may also be dropped off at the Garwood Public Library for recycling with Terracyle: Any brand of empty inkjet cartridges, any brand of plastic diaper packages (such as Huggies) and the plastic packaging of personal wipes, such as Cottonelle or other brands. If you have any questions, feel free to call the Library. Please do not place these items in the outdoor book drop, they must be brought inside the library and placed in the special recycle boxes. On Saturday, April 20th, the Garwood Public Library celebrated 80 years of service to the Borough. Starting as a project of the Garwood PTA in 1933, and housed in a small room in the basement of Lincoln School, the Library was turned over to Borough control in 1939. As the municipal library, it has been offering books and other materials to the residents and students of the town ever since. When the Library first began, it had one visitor table, held merely 4,000 books and a few record albums. Later in the late 70s, the Library was moved to the basement of the Franklin School at the corner of Walnut Street and Third Avenue, to a double sized basement classroom, where it grew to about 25,000 items including magazines, a small reference …

Many of the songs in this program and the stories behind them were taught to Handy by his mentor Pete Seeger.
This release was submitted by the Garwood Library. The Garwood Public Library presents folk singer/song writer Spook Handy on Wednesday, April 17th at 7:00 PM. His style of acoustic guitar, harmonica, and singing fits right in with the likes of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, and Peter, Paul and Mary. Many of the songs in this program and the stories behind them were taught to Mr. Handy by his mentor Pete Seeger. Mr. Handy has four full length CDs to his credit, with a fifth on its way. He has written for film and theater, and his songs have charted as high as #10 on the folk radio charts. He has toured throughout the country, playing more than 3,000 concerts, and has performed dozens of times with Pete Seeger and shared …

To celebrate Valentine’s Day and Library Lover’s Month, adult patrons may check out a “blind date”, a wrapped book to take home and enjoy, during the weeks of February 18th through March 1st. The Garwood Public Library will host Linda Henderson of the State of New Jersey’s Unclaimed Property Owner Outreach Program on Saturday, January 19th at 10:00 AM. Unclaimed property is any financial asset that had been unclaimed by its rightful owner for a specified time period. Unclaimed Property’s mission is to reunite owners with their unclaimed financial assets. Examples of unclaimed property are bank accounts that have been inactive for at least three years, unclaimed money orders, certificates of deposits, and payroll wages. Help check out hunger this holiday season with donations to a Food Drive being sponsored by the Union County Public Libraries. From November 26 - December 17, your local public library will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items to benefit the New Jersey Community Food Bank and other local food pantries. Collection bins will be conveniently located at the public libraries and library staff will then route 100% of the donations to designated food banks. On Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., the Garwood Public Library will present a free program with authors Richard Veit and Mark Nonestied based on their book, New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones: History in the Landscape, published by Rutgers University Press, which received the Authors Award from the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance in 2010. The presentation is about the cultural history of New Jersey’s historic cemeteries and burial grounds from the 17th century through the dawn of the 21st century. It will provide an understanding of the state’s historic burial places and the gravemarkers they contain.
