Up for a vote on Tuesday's council agenda is a resolution supporting certain gun control measures.
At the last Garwood Council meeting, Councilman Bill Nierstedt presented a resolution he drafted concerning gun control. The resolution lists Garwood's support of state and national adoption of the following gun measures: 1. The requiring of training in firearm safety for gun buyers, paid for by the gun buyers and 2. The re-imposition of the federal ban on the sale of military style assault weapons as they account for a larger share of guns used in mass-murders; and 3. The ban of high-capacity bullet/magazines/reduction to ten rounds maximum, and 4. The adoptiong of universal background checks inclusive of a review of the National Terrorist Watch list, and providing a waiting period before the sale of all weapons, including sales that take…

At their Tuesday night meeting and public budget hearing, Garwood Council approved the proposed 2013 budget by a vote of 4 to 1, with new councilman Steven Blaufeder abstaining. The budget calls for a tax increase of $95 per $100,000 in home assessment, or 9.5 tax points, which equates to a 3.31 percent increase over last year's budget. (For comparison, the borough's 2012 budget included a tax increase of 3.8 percent over 2011, or 10.51 tax points, which equated to an increase of $105 per 100,000 in home assessment.) Former council candidate Steven Blaufeder (R) has been chosed to join Garwood council. At Tuesday night's Garwood council meeting, Sara Todisco (D) nominated Blaufeder from the three nominees the Garwood Republican Party submitted to fill the unexpired term of Victor DeFilippo (R), who recently resigned because of work duties. Todisco's nomination was unanimously approved by council. Republicans had also nominated 2012 council candidate Michael Martin and Blaufeder's 2011 running mate, Carol Kearney. Blaufeder owns and manages TT Cycles, a custom motorcycle import/export business in Berkeley Heights. Garwood Republicans have nominated three former council candidates to fill the unexpired term of Victor DeFilippo who recently resigned because of work duties. Republicans chose 2012 election candidate Michael Martin and 2011 candidates Carol Kearney and Steven Blaufeder. All three candidates are local small business owners: Martin owns Promotional Rental in Garwood; Kearney owns Unique Cruise and Travel in Garwood; and Blaufeder owns and manages TT Cycles, a custom motorcycle import/export business in Berkeley Heights. Garwood Councilman Victor DeFilippo (R) has resigned from Garwood Council as of noon today, Feb. 12. In a resignation email to Borough Administrator Christina Ariemma, DeFilippo cited a change in his employment, including a change to his hours and duties, as the reason for his exit. "It was a pleasure to work with all of you," DeFilippo wrote in the email. "I can tell you this was not an easy decision." DeFilippo was elected to council in Nov. 2010 and his three-year term would have ended in December of this year. Garwood Council will meet for its first February meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at Borough Hall. Tuesday night's agenda includes a resolution recently discussed by council (13-167) that advocates for NJ Transit's recently tested dual-powered trains to be deployed on the Raritan Valley line, which runs through Garwood. According to Councilman Bill Nierstedt, these trains would provide a one-seat ride to New York Penn Station because they convert from diesel to electric power to go through Hudson River passenger rail tunnels. Currently, Raritan Valley riders have to transfer to an electric train in Newark to get to Manhattan.
