This release was submitted by Dr. Laila Machado Colicchio. Congratulations to Alyssa Colicchio and Lauren Mulvihill, 6th grade cheer, Luke Giltner, 6th grade football, and Jennifer Casalino and Alexandra Dorey, 8th grade cheer. The five Kumpf Middle School students participate in Pop Warner and were chosen as First Team for Pop Warner Eastern Region Scholar Athletes. Out of 1,927 applicants who were submitted from 5 states, they were among the top 35 cheer and top 35 football who were chosen. These athletes qualify only if they have a 96% or higher grade point average. In addition, they take into consideration the students participation in clubs, groups, volunteer work, community service, etc. They will receive a certificate and medal …

This release was submitted by the Clark School District. At Carl H. Kumpf Middle School in Clark, students in Nicole Mailloux’s Language Arts classes are applying their persuasive writing skills to help assist New Jersey victims of Hurricane Sandy. Students are writing letters to local businesses asking for donations for raffle prizes to auction off at Kumpf’s Boardwalk Raffle Night fundraiser, which will take place later this year. The event will occur on April 5th, and students will be creating boardwalk-style games and holding a prize raffle for those attending. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit New Jersey Hometown Heroes—which deals directly with families affected by the hurricane—and the New Jersey Hurricane Sandy Relief …

The following press release was submitted by the Clark School District. Gabriella Smith, a student at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School, was recently published in the MAAP Newsletter, a quarterly newsletter for families of more advanced individuals with Autism, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (Volume 3, 2012). Gabby’s memoir, “My Life with Asperger’s” provided a candid glimpse into the life of a sixth grader growing up with Asperger’s. The memoir assignment required students to reflect on six of the most important experiences in their lives. This September, Carl H. Kumpf Middle School in Clark will be implementing the new cutting edge Progressive Mathematics Initiative (PMI) as the vehicle to deliver the middle school mathematics program. The PMI was developed by New Jersey’s 2006 Teacher of the Year, Dr. Robert Goodman, and has realized a good deal of success in places it has been implemented. The program is technology based and is taught from a Smartboard with students collaborating on problems and communicating their responses through responders. As part of the implementation of the program, Carl H. Kumpf School Principal Jennifer Feeley has been outfitting each of the rooms designated for PMI instruction with Smartboards and responders and arranging for all middle school …

On May 22, the Physical Education Departments of Arthur L. Johnson High School and Carl H. Kumpf Middle School recently hosted their third annual American Diabetes Association’s School Walk for Diabetes. The walk is designed to educate children and their school community about the growing diabetes epidemic and provide educational tools – aligned with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education standards for physical education – to promote the prevention of diabetes and its complications. School Walk for Diabetes is also an educational school fundraiser that supports programs aimed at curing and preventing diabetes, and improving the lives of those affected by diabetes.
