Murder Suspect 'Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker,' Stopped at Bistro 1051 Before Leaving Clark

Bistro 1051 owner Michael Savvis tells Patch the suspect came to his restaurant around 10 p.m on Mother's Day.

Update, May 16, 7 p.m. CAUGHT: 'Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker' Arrested in Philadelphia -- Original story, May 16, 6 p.m.: As news broke today that police are searching for Internet sensation "Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker" for the murder of Clark resident Joseph Galfy, Bistro 1051 Owner Michael Savvis suddenly made a connection. Savvis says Kai, (aka Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, 24) stopped into Bistro 1051 around 10 p.m. on Sunday, Mother's Day. "He asked for water," Savvis tells Patch. "He looked disheveled and caught me totally off guard. We were closed, and he definitely made me a little nervous." Savvis says he told McGillvary they were closed and didn't have any water, and suggested he try Phillippo's Pizza a few doors …

Clark's Bistro 1051 Adds Wine Service, Banquet Room

The restaurant celebrates its fifth anniversary with new offerings for customers.

Bistro 1051 owner Michael Savvis decided to celebrate his restaurant's five year anniversary in style. The BYOB restaurant recently began also offering wines on site from California label Domenica Vineyard. "We're still a BYOB, but if you forget to bring wine or want to try our offerings we have 12 different California wine selections by the bottle," says Savvis. Savvis also recently bought the storefront five spaces down in the Clark Shopping Center (the former Elite Gym) to add a banquet space – Bistro South. "We have a loyal customer base and there was demand for more banquet space," says Savvis. "With this addition we've been able to add more and the response has been very positive. People are happy to have another location to have an …

Bread Bandit Busted! Iselin Man Helps Himself to Two Servings of Theft

Gary Miller, 52, has been nabbed for roll robbery by Clark PD.

Clark Det. George Marmarou was out on patrol when he saw a familiar maroon pickup truck drive by him and thought, "That's the guy." Marmarou recognized the truck from Clark restaurant Bistro 1051's surveillance tapes: The doughy thief has twice been caught on camera lifting loaves from the restaurant's morning bread delivery. After first striking in February, the man was caught on film again just weeks ago. "The detective was just out on patrol and saw a vehicle pass him that fit the description," Clark Police Captain Alan Scherb told Patch. "He made a car stop and in the course of his investigation, the individual confessed." Scherb says the man is Gary Miller, 52, of Iselin. "He cooperated, was brought in, charged with two counts of …

VIDEO: The Bistro 1051 Bread Bandit Strikes Again!

Even after his Patch debut, this daring thief can't keep his hands off those baguettes.

Could it be? Back again, the suspect we dubbed "the Bread Bandit" has brazenly returned to Clark's Bistro 1051 and made off with some more dough: Security cameras show what appears to be the same man in a maroon Ford F-150 pickup tossing Bistro's morning bread delivery into the bed of his truck. Bistro 1051 owner Michael Savvis says he's shocked that the man was bold enough to become a repeat offender, especially after Patch ran photos of the theft and Channel 4 News picked up our story. This incident happened at 6:05 a.m. on Friday, according to Savvis. This is the fourth time Bistro's bread has gone missing and the second time the theft has been caught on camera. "I think this guy has got a lot of nerve," Savvis told Patch. "I mean after…

Can You Help Catch the Bistro 1051 Bread Bandit?

Don't get between a man and his baguettes.

Most criminals steal dough from a bank. This bandit helped himself to Bistro 1051's baguettes. After thieves stole a dishwasher from the back of the restaurant and his morning bread delivery went missing twice in December, Bistro 1051 owner Michael Savvis decided to get tough. His newly installed security cameras caught a man swipe a $75 bag of bread from the front of his restaurant again in February. "It’s a big inconvenience," says Savvis. "The bread comes from New York and you can’t get another delivery that same day." Savvis handed over the video to Clark Police who are looking for a male suspect in a maroon Ford F-150 pick-up truck. "It looks like he comes after stopping at Clark Bagel," says Clark Detective George Marmarou. Perhaps …
