Council President Sara Todisco says the paper refused to retract inaccurate figures on per taxpayer costs for the project from its Jan. 3 issue.
Garwood's first regular council meeting of the year brought fireworks, as Council President Sara Todisco took to the mic to call out the Westfield Leader for printing incorrect information regarding the borough's controversial Athletic Field Complex in its Jan. 3 issue, part two of the paper's annual Year in Review. Last month, officials ceremoniously broke ground on the $3.2-million project, which includes a new multi-purpose turf field, field house with a full kitchen and activity space, upgrades and lighting for the existing baseball field, and a bocce court. Plans for the building of the complex have been underway for more than 10 years, with the council granting final approval this past fall. Todisco says this is the second time the …

Saturday's ceremony celebrated the start of construction on the long-discussed project.
Garwood officials and residents gathered at the borough's Little League Field to celebrate the groundbreaking of the long-discussed Athletic Field Complex. The $3.2-million project includes a new multi-purpose turf field, field house with a full kitchen and activity space, upgrades and lighting for the existing baseball field, and a bocce court. It will be partially funded with $1.1 million in county and state grants. Plans for the building of the complex have been underway for more than 10 years. The project wasn't approved without controversy: Several residents attended the council meetings proceeding the complex's final approval to argue that the field and the tax increase necessary to fund it were more than Garwood could afford. But …

On Tuesday, Garwood Council will vote whether to approve the bond ordinance that would fund the borough's long-discussed Athletic Field Complex. Many residents have been outspoken about their objections to the project because of the expense taxpayers will bear to fund it. This week and last week, we received several letters to the editor voicing similar sentiments. Read the letters from last week, here. Read this week's, below. At the last meeting of the Garwood Borough Council the mayor and five of the six council members stated that they are voting to build a 3.2 million dollar athletic complex in Garwood in spite of the fact that the majority of the Garwood residents at the meeting were against this project and a public hearing on this …

On Tuesday, Garwood Council will vote whether to approve the bond ordinance that would fund the borough's long-discussed Athletic Field Complex. Many residents have been outspoken about their objections to the project because of the expense taxpayers will bear to fund it. This week, we received several letters to the editor voicing similar sentiments. Read them below. --------------------- It’s Time for Compromise On Garwood’s Athletic Field The proposal for a $3.2-million athletic complex in Garwood has been presented as an all-or-nothing deal, and that’s unfair. The costs have not been broken down so that we can see what we’re being asked to pay for. What part of that $3.2 million will go to a new field house, for example? How much will …

Council approved the introduction of the bond ordinance for the project by a 5 to 1 vote.
Garwood Council took the first step towards final approval of the proposed Athletic Field Complex at Tuesday night's borough council meeting when they voted 5 to 1 to introduce the bond ordinance that will allow for financing of the project. The packed meeting brought out more than 50 residents with strong and differing opinions on the project who spoke out during the public comments section of the meeting. After hearing from all who chose to speak, councilmembers and the mayor voiced their thoughts on the project with all but Jim Mathieu expressing support for the complex to move forward as proposed. The ordinance council voted to introduce tonight will have its public hearing at the next council meeting on August 14. If approved, council…

Garwood Council will meet Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. in Borough Hall.
Garwood Council will meet Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. in Borough Hall for their first July meeting. See a PDF of council's agenda in our gallery. At council's last meeting, we reported that Garwood's Athletic Field Complex project was in limbo because of the high cost. At that meeting, after receiving new bids for the Athletic Field Complex, with the lowest among them at $2.9 million, Garwood councilmembers discussed whether or not the borough could afford to move forward with the project, which is now more than 12 years in the making. The cost to taxpayers to complete the project would be $1.6 million in bonded funds over 20 years if council awards the project to the $2.9 million bidder. The additional $1.3 million in funds for the project…

Councilmembers discussed the bids received and whether the borough can afford to move forward with the project.
After receiving new bids for the Athletic Field Complex, with the lowest among them at $2.9 million, Garwood councilmembers discussed whether or not the borough could afford to move forward with the project, which is now more than 12 years in the making. The cost to taxpayers to complete the project would be $1.6 million in bonded funds over 20 years if council awards the project to the $2.9 million bidder. The additional $1.3 million in funds for the project would come from grants and capital surplus. Councilman Louis Petruzzelli stated that when the Athletic Field Complex committee met on June 19 to review the bids, the committee recommended moving forward with the project. In the first round of bidding earlier this year, the lowest bid …

I questioned that 1501 number also back a couple of years ago on my blog when i did an annual budget recap Q&A, but that apparantly could be the more accurate number since it came direct form…   more ›
