Bulk Pickup is Back in Garwood, For a Price

A new opt-in program is available to residents for an $80 fee.

Bulk pickup is back in Garwood, with a new opt-in program available to residents who buy an $80 permit. The $80 permit allows for disposal of up to 750 pounds of bulk. Neighbors can also share a permit and group their waste, so long as the load stays under 750 pounds. To sign up and for detailed guidelines, see the program flyer in our gallery; it was also mailed to all residents. The pickup is to begin June 24, after the borough-wide garage sale scheduled for June 22 and 23. The bulk issue has been a controversial topic after the borough eliminated the free service in 2010. That cut was a budgetary one; eliminating the program would help to compensate for a loss of $126,000 in state aid. (The program cost the borough $32,500 for six …

As Rebuilding Continues, Shore is Open for Business

Tourism commissioner says rental market is healthy.

Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of …

'Kai the Hitchhiker' Defender Starts Online Petition

The petition's organizer writes, "by viewing his internet famous interview ... you can tell that this man is the farthest thing from a violent criminal let a murderer."

In addition to a fundraiser for 'Kai the Hitchhiker's $3 million bail, a Change.org online petition to free Kai is also making the rounds on the internet. Kai, whose real name is Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, went from Internet celeb to accused murderer last week, charged with allegedly killing Clark resident Joseph Galfy. For his part, in a May 14 post on his Facebook page, McGillvary alleges that he was drugged and raped, and asks readers, "what would you do?" “You look in his eyes and you can see he’s a good kid,” petition organizer Donna Miller of Las Vegas told the Star-Ledger. The petition so far has 109 signers with a goal of 10,000. Miller's call to action says: "Free Caleb "Kai" McGillvary who has been arrested and charged with …

He still killed a man. If someone drugged and raped me I would let the police handle it I would not use blunt force trauma on the person. I would call the police. This is what he wants people to believe. When was he drugged? He was dropped off by the lawyer in the morning to go to Asbury Park then came back late Sunday. So if he was drugged how could he kill him the same night he was drugged. If …   more ›

Grace Park will replace outgoing Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.

A former federal prosecutor will replace outgoing Prosecutor Theodore Romankow as Union County's Acting Prosecutor effective June 17, Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced Thursday. "I am confident that Grace Park will do an outstanding job of leading the effort to bring criminals to justice and protect the residents of Union County, Chiesa said. Where's the Cheapest Gas in Clark and Garwood?

You can use this gas price widget to always find the lowest price of the moment. Pro tip: Gas up early this week to save money.

Click here for a full-screen view of the gas price map. If you don't see a map of our local area, click the magnifying glass in the upper right to enter your address. Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …

'Kai the Hitchhiker' Caught on Bistro 1051 Surveillance Video

McGillvary is seen walking through the Clarkton Shopping Center before entering the restaurant and asking for water.

As news broke last Thursday that Internet sensation "Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker" was wanted for the murder of Clark resident Joseph Galfy, Bistro 1051 owner Michael Savvis saw the 24-year-old's picture and suddenly made a connection. Savvis says Kai, (whose real name is Caleb Lawrence McGillvary) stopped into Bistro 1051 around 10 p.m. on Sunday, Mother's Day—the same day police say he murdered Galfy. Savvis called police with the information and handed over video surveillance (seen here) of McGillvary entering and exiting Bistro 1051. McGillvary was arrested in Philadelphia later that day. "He asked for water," Savvis said. "He looked disheveled and caught me totally off guard. We were closed, and he definitely made me a little …

Union County Slips in Kids Count Rankings

Union County fell from number 8 in the state to 9, though the news isn't all bad.

Union County's overall position dropped in the most recent New Jersey Kids County rankings, falling one spot among the state's 21 counties from eighth place last year to ninth. But data from the annual survey, which was accumulated by Advocates for Children of New Jersey and measures progress in improving the lives of children in 13 critical areas, found that despite some issues the news isn't all bad for Union County's school-aged children. Union County's one-spot slip is likely the result of an increase in unemployment as well as a drop in child care options for working parents. Despite the fewer child care options, however, which dropped from 675 per 1,000 children up to four years old in 2011 to 665 in 2013, Union County still has more…

Parents of 'Kai the Hitchhiker:' He Has Behavioral Issues, Was in Treatment Homes

Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, a.k.a. 'Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker,' has been charged with the murder of Clark resident Joseph Galfy.

In the interview that went viral and propelled 'Kai the Hitchhiker,' who is accused of killing a Clark man, to Internet fame, the 24-year-old said he has no family, but two people claiming to be his parents have now come forward to speak on their son's behalf. In an interview with The Star Ledger, Gil McGillivary, 57, of Ontario, Canada, and a Shirley of Alberta, Canada, (who spoke to the paper on the condition they not use her last name), said their son was raised in Canada—and in treatments homes where he battled behavioral problems. "He was in treatment homes until he turned 18 and then they cut him loose and washed their hands of him," Gil McGillivary said in the report. "Caleb made accusations that he was physically and mentally …
