“Cesar- Kai Academy, how are you today?” That’s the greeting you’ll receive when you call Cranford’s newest educational facility. And they genuinely care to hear your response. Perhaps this is the reason why the three-year-old business outgrew its first location in Garwood. With a student body over 200 strong, their previous 1,500 square foot space could no longer facilitate the academy and their vast curriculum. Months of searching resulted in the discovery on their new Cranford location—at the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Raritan Road, across from Clark BBQ and next to the Dunkin’ Donuts. The summer was spent gutting the ten room real estate office to create the open plan layout nearly double in size, complete with two training floors, multipurpose room, pro-shop and instructors’ lounge. Three months of construction and attaining building approvals was well worth the effort, claims Mario Cesario, owner and founder of Cesar-Kai Academy. “We want our member to be ecstatic to be here. We aim to provide a tangibly positive, supportive atmosphere for our students and their families…a place where they look forward to coming to and cant’ wait to return to.” This is fitting of a school whose name is derived from the Japanese character “kai”, which represents being uplifted, renewed and improved. While promoting health and fitness from age two through adult, the classes on offer encourage self-confidence, improve self-discipline and boost concentration, coordination and problem-solving skills. In addition, the Academy teaches self-defense, cardio-kickboxing and Martial Arts Classes. After-school classes for children are popular, as well as cardio kickboxing for women. Cesar-Kai Academy participates in local and regional karate tournaments. “By implementing curriculum that stimulates spirit, mind and body, Cesar-Kai Academy alters common preconceptions of commercialized martial arts.” With the character development element of the curriculum, Cesario and the Academy’s team of certified Black-Belt instructors are able to teach their students through and integrated method which is applicable in all areas of life. So what’s CKA’s next expansion? Language and instrumental music lessons are in the works, in an effort to expound on the Academy’s quest to improve spirit, mind and body. Clearly, Cesario aims to have your response to “how are you today?” be a positive one.
