This letter to the editor was submitted by the Garwood First Aid Squad.

To our local residents,

The Garwood First Aid Squad has served this community, and those close by, through good and bad times over the past 74 years.  At this time, we find ourselves in desperate need of assistance. Our membership has dropped from 15 to 6 active responders.

Do you have a few hours a week to join us and respond to the help of others?  We are seeking physically able adults over the age of 18, capable of lifting 50-100 pounds, of good moral character and good driving record. We expect you to be able attain certification as a Professional Rescuer for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) First Responder First Aid and or New Jersey Emergency Medical Technician, unless you already possess these certifications and are ready to be a probationary member.

All members are required to volunteer at least 10 hours per week plus 24 hours of service one weekend a month to support our organization. Many of us have been providing this support for more than 10 years.  For this dedication we will pay for your training and provide experiences that can enrich your life beyond your expectations.

We want to see our organization grow to its former strength of 20-30 members so we can share the time and possibly reduce the monthly expectations. We consider ourselves “the little squad that can” and we do at the present all we can for the residents of Garwood, and neighboring communities. We want to continue this free service in the spirit that it was started in with your help.

Should you believe you meet our qualifications and expectations we would like to meet with you to review the details and specifics of our membership and activities. Please call 908-789-0300 and leave a message, and we will arrange a mutually agreeable time to meet for this discussion.

Thank you for your time,

Captain G. Kobliska Sr.
Lt. L. Montagne
