Clark Daisies Get a 'Kick' Out of Learning Self-Defense from Councilwoman

Clark Councilwoman and Sensei Angel Albanese taught the girls about the Cuong Nhu philosophy of self defense.

Sensei Angel Albanese from the Clark Cuong Nhu Shojin Dojo was excited to have the opportunity to work with Daisy Girl Scout Troop 425 at the Clark Public Library.

The program focused on two forms of self defense, self defense from bullying at school for example and self defense against strangers.

Self defense for five- and six-year-olds is a bit different than it is for older children and adults, and yet the basic principles emphasized were the same. Albanese emphasized the importance of being Aware, Alert, Anticipation, Avoidance and Action as a big part of the Cuong Nhu philosophy of self defense.

During the seminar Albanese not only talked about avoiding situations where strangers can attack, but also how to protect yourself if you can’t get away. Albanese told the girls that the most important weapon they should always use is their voice. The girls practiced dropping to the ground, kicking and using phrases like “Stranger Danger.”

“I think they liked kicking and punching the bag most," said Albanese. "Karate is fun.”

Gabriella Scipioni and Marisa Venturella, students from Cuong Nhu School, also came to help demonstrate the different techniques the girls could use. Each Daisy Girl Scout earned a “Self-Defense Patch” thanks to Sensei Albanese.

Albanese holds the rank of Shodan and teaches at the Clark Shojin Dojo Cuong Nhu karate school. Albanese also serves as Councilwoman-at-Large in Clark. Albanese said she takes great pride serving her community, which is a large part of the Cuong Nhu philosophy, especially at the library where you might spot her.

Albanese volunteers her time at Brewer School teaching Karate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 7-9 p.m. all year long. Classes are free for children, teens and adults. Cuong Nhu gives families an opportunity to work out together since anyone age seven and up can participate.

The Cuong Nhu Shojin Dojo has been in Clark for 26 years. The school is under the direction of Sensei Rosario Fico. Other instructors/senseis include former Director Keith Ford and Don Massarelli.
