Crossroads Hosts All-Day Sound Station Benefit Saturday

An all-ages show will start at noon, while a 21-and-older set is planned for 7 p.m.

Friends of Sound Station owners Bob Larsen and Liz Walsh and fellow music fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a full-day festival of sound starting at noon on Saturday, April 21.

The Crossroads in Garwood will host more than a dozen bands who will jam to support the rebuilding of the family-owned music shop that was destroyed in the late January that gutted six South Avenue West businesses.

Since that time, more than $16,000 has been raised through an Internet fundraising site to help Larsen and Walsh get back on their feet.

The all-day blowout coincides with Record Store Day, which is celebrated in the U.S. and abroad to recognize independently-owned record stores. One year ago, Larsen hosted local bands at his South Avenue West music store to mark the occasion and said  he began booking bands regularly and looked forward to hosting many more live music events.

Lee Frankel, owner of The Crossroads, said he's excited to be able to do something to support his friend and former classmate.

"We went to together so it's great to be able to help out with this," Frankel said. "We've got a lot of people coming out. To have it on Record Store Day -- it's great timing. In this day and age, independent stores are just hanging on. It's really nice to see all the support they've gotten. We've got to stick together. We've got to support live music. We're on the same team."

To accommodate Sound Station's loyal but underage customers, an all-ages show will start at noon. At 7 p.m., a second show for those 21 and older will begin. Saturday also marks the release of the Sound Station Compilation CD featuring original music recorded just for the support of Sound Station.
