Today: First Tennis Tournament Held by Clark Rec Begins

Donations from the tournament will be given to the 'Restore the Shore' foundation.

This weekend, Clark Recreation will introduce its First Annual Tennis Tournament held at the recreation tennis courts on Westfield Avenue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All proceeds from the tournament will be given to the “Restore the Shore” Foundation.

The tournament is being run by ALJ alum James Villari, who had a decorated tennis career at York College.

There is an entrance fee donation for each person signing up to play — adults and children 12 years old and up. Non-residents are welcome to participate as well.

Style of play is best 2 of 3 sets; if there is a 3rd set players have to play a 10-point tie breaker if they are pushed for court time or daylight restrictions. This will be at the discretion of the tournament official, James Villari.  Consolation matches will be offered. Balls will be supplied. Trophies will be given to 1st and 2nd place winners.

Clark Recreation is also still seeking donations.

"Tough economic times have affected everyone which makes it even more difficult to hold such an event," said Clark Recreation Director Ralph Bernardo. "That is why I am asking the community businesses and organizations for help. Any monetary donation would be greatly appreciated. No donation is too small. The generosity and support of your establishment has been very much appreciated as your past donations have allowed me to do a lot for our community." During the weekend of the tournament, a banner with sponsoring businesses is welcome to be posted on the tennis court fencing.

Checks can be made out to Clark Recreation.
