Mother Seton Volleyball Beats DePaul in States Sectional Quarterfinals

The Setters will play Immaculate Heart on Thursday in the sectional semifinals.

The Records: The Mother Seton Setters (23-3-1) battled the DePaul Spartans (16-7) at home on Tuesday in the NJSIAA non-public group quarterfinals.

The Final Score: 2-0, Mother Seton. Mother Seton put up a steady fight against DePaul winning 25-21, 25-21. The Setters started strong and dominated the first set, maintaining a lead. The second set wasn't as easy for the team, who had lost steam and were forced to play catch up. Head coach Tom Moran kept the girls from panicking. "I told them to focus on the game one point at a time and that we'd eventually catch up," he said. After an excellent momentum-changing block from Senior Jouviane Alexandre, Mother Seton was able to climb the scoreboard one point at a time.

The Heroes: Senior Laura Fernandez was aggressive with 9 kills and 9 digs, and junior Noelle Maertz had a big game with 20 assists, 2 aces and 14 digs.

The Quote: "I feel like everybody has their glitches and we know how to bounce back," said senior Lauren Mateo. "We're really good friends outside of school, so we've got a certain bond that helps on the court."

What's Next: Mother Seton will take on top-seeded Immaculate Heart (23-1) in Bloomfield at 5:30 p.m. for the State sectional semifinals. Head coach Tom Moran says the team has a strategy: "We're definitely going to work on more aggressive serving. We're going to play them as tough as we can."
