During a recent summer vacation, Avena traveled to El Salvador with his church to assist schools, churches, and villages, including in the middle of the vicious MS-13 gang territory. On a regular basis Avena leads the worship at his Friday evening yough groups. Those who have attended these Friday evening workshop sessions state they are in awe of Avena’s talents and abilities to unite others.

When presenting Avena, it was highlighted that when a new student at Arthur L. Johnson High School was dealing with the physical and emotional trauma of trying to find his way in a new school, it was Avena who was selected to try to ease the student’s apprehensions and help him acclimate to his new school.  Those who know Avena commented that he is so accustomed to helping others that he does not see his acts and accomplishments as something special, but instead is simply his natural way of living his life.

Avena had a highly distinguished high school career where he excelled academically, participated on athletic teams, was a member of student government, served as a peer leader, and received academic honors and awards.  This coming September he will continue his studies at Rutgers University.

“Marc is an extraordinary young man who exemplifies altruism, service to others, and the highest standard of excellence," said Clark Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Knops.  "He is highly respected by all facets of the school community including fellow students and classmates, teachers, and the school and district administration. He is a wonderful ambassador who represents himself, his family, Arthur L. Johnson High School, and the Clark School Community in the finest of fashion. He will certainly be missed upon his graduation next month, although I am certain he will continue his works as a humanitarian and his performance as an exemplary student at Rutgers University.”
