Spring Sports Preview: Mother Seton Has High Hopes For Golf Program's Second Year

The Setters are off to a 1-3 start on the season.

The Mother Seton Regional golf team will look to drive to a winning record this week after a 1-3 start.

Although the Setters have dropped their last three outings, second-year head coach Jon Semcer is optimistic about his team this season.

“Last year we placed fifth in the conference championship, which I thought was a pretty nice accomplishment for a first year program," Semcer told Patch. "There were some growing pains but the girls have been very dedicated and committed.”

Mother Seton, which has defeated Oak Knoll, suffered its three losses to J.P. Stevens, Kent Place and Westfield. “We had a match with Westfield," said Semcer. "We lost to them but it was close. We had a match with J.P. Stevens, we lost to them in a very close match. We lost to Kent Place School, and we defeated Oak Knoll.

The Setters are aligned in the North Jersey Girls Golf League along with Chatham, Kent Place, Millburn, Mount St. Dominic Academy, Oak Knoll and Saint Elizabeth Academy, and are currently 1-1 in division matchups.

Mother Seton, which initiated the program last year, is returning all five of the remaining players from last year’s team.

Key golfers this season for Mother Seton include juniors Noelle Maertz, Jahnavi Cosaraju and Catherine Serzan, and freshman Emily Bledsoe.

Maertz has been a key contributor so far this season, finishing fifth out of 92 players individually in the Hunterdon Central Golf Tournament. Maertz also has previous victories in last year’s Rutgers Invitational and the Greater Middlesex Conference Individual Championship. “Noelle finished eighth in the state last year in the individual NJSIAA tournament," said Semcer. "She also won the longest drive contest at Hunterdon Central."

Today, April 19, Mother Seton will play Mount Saint Dominic and Wednesday, will return home to play against Chatham and Millburn in a three-team match. Mother Seton will then participate in the Montgomery High School Tournament next Tuesday before playing at St. Elizabeth Academy on April 27.

“We’re looking to make some noise in the league and improve our fifth place standing from last year,” said Semcer. “I’m hoping the girls make some steady progress and make a move in that direction.”
