Softball: Mother Seton Knocked Out of MCR Tournament

Despite the loss, Mother Seton trotted off the field with heads held high as this was the first softball quarterfinal in the school's history.

The Records: The Mother Seton Setters (13-6) squared off against Monroe High School (13-11) Wednesday afternoon, May 25, in the quarterfinals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament in South Plainfield.

The Final Score: 8-1, Monroe. After stunning back-to-back victories Sunday that garnered Mother Seton a spot in the GMC quarterfinals, the team could not replicate their success. They upset Colonia and South Plainfield, two gigantic teams that were seeded much higher than the Setters, but Monroe's key hits proved too much to overcome.

Monroe got the first points on the board, and the Setters were unable to recover the deficit. The Falcons earned the first run on a bases-loaded walk in the first, while a solo homer from Brianna Davidson notched up a second in the third. Mother Seton seemed to still have a fighting chance, playing tight defense in the second and third to stave off further Monroe runs.

But Monroe pulled out the big bats in the fourth. Alexa Carini's RBI was soon followed by a Brittnie Felice triple that drove in three. A well-timed bunt brought in another, cementing Monroe's lead at 7-0.

Junior pitcher Amy Frost struggled in the circle, and had trouble getting the ball over the plate. She manage to put away four Monroe batters, and pitched through the seventh inning. She also had an RBI in the top of the fifth, racking up the only Setter run of the day.

Though Mother Seton appeared posed for a comeback, Monroe's final run in the bottom of the sixth put the kibosh on the Setter's Conference Championship dreams. Despite the loss, Mother Seton trotted off the field with heads held high. It was the first softball quarterfinal in the school's history, an achievement the team would not soon forget.

The Heroes: Olivia Ortiz went 2-4, slugging two singles. Amy Frost's single knocked in Raquel Molina for Seton Hall's lone run.

The Quote: “I thought our girls played well," Mother Seton Head Coach Tom Moran said. "Offensively, we only had four strike outs; [Monroe was] putting the bats on the ball. The other team made some great defensive plays. I'm proud of out offensive game. Defensively, we had one error, which really didn't cost us at all. I think our girls did a great job."

What's Next: The Setters (13-6) host Union Catholic (9-8-1) in the State Tournament Preliminaries today at 4 p.m at home.
