Kumpf Sixth Graders Donate Canned Goods to Local Food Banks

But first, students used the foods in a statistics project.

This release was received by the Clark School District.

Students in Krista Chapman’s sixth grade mathematics classes at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School in Clark completed a statistics project using nutritional information from canned foods.  All food that was generously given to complete the project is being donated to local food banks in Clark and neighboring communities.

Together Ms. Chapman, Ms. Vacchio, and Mrs. D’Amico’s classes collected hundreds of food items for donation.  Students were asked to create different visual displays of nutritional information such as line plots, histograms, and box and whisker plots.  Students used the calorie content in the foods as their data values.  After completing their graphs, students were given time to prepare a group presentation for the class.  Groups used their information to make conclusions about the food product they studied.  Students were able to use their creative talents such as singing, dancing, drawing, and acting to add to their presentations.
