Athletes Highlighted During Clark Board of Education Showcase

ALJ golfer wins county championship three out of four years, middle school softball team outscores opponents 117-20 throughout entire season.

Students from Arthur L. Johnson High School and Carl H. Kumpf Middle School were honored Tuesday night at the Board of Education’s seasonal Showcase of Success. Every athletic season, the Board of Education highlights student achievements in sports.

“These showcases of success are really a high point of the athletic season because we get to honor our champions, our student athletes,” said Gus Kalikas, supervisor of athletics for the Clark School District.

Kalikas honored Clark’s successful sports teams, with special acknowledgement to Jacob Stockl, who won the Union County Individual Championship in golf for three of his four years at ALJ.

Kalikas said his accomplishments are unprecedented, and that only one other person in the history of the district has won the championship for three years.

He will be playing golf at Rutgers University in the fall.

Other teams recognized are the ALJ spring track team, the ALJ softball team and the Carl H. Kumpf middle school softball team, who went undefeated during the season.

The middle school softball team outscored its opponents 117-20 in 11 games.

“You can be undefeated with close games, but they were dominant, and I know the high school team is itching to get these players,” Kalikas said.

To honor academic achievement, Kaitlyn Perez was recognized as valedictorian after four years of academic success.

Perez played music, performed in theater, took nine AP courses, played on the tennis team and managed to maintain a 4.735 GPA, said Kenneth Knops, superintendent of schools.

“We are very proud of Kaitlyn and her achievements,” Knops said. “She is a great example of an ALJ student and we wish her much success in college next year.”

She will be attending Bucknell University in the fall.
