Smith moved to Clark in 1994 and is married with two children. He serves as president of the Clark Girls Softball League and Clark Travel Basketball. Smith also supports the Clark Benefit Fund and Clark Education Fund and has previously been involved in those organizations. This is his first time running for office in Clark.

"I’ve known Mayor Bonaccorso for many years and I told him that if there was ever an opportunity to serve the township, I'd be interested," Smith told Patch. "I'd like to put some time and effort into helping all the residents in Clark. The Republicans have had a great track record with seniors and the youth."
