Garwood's Athletic Field Complex Needs More Soil Testing

Additional testing will cost $12,500.

Garwood has scheduled a special meeting this Friday to authorize additional soil testing for the borough's under-construction Athletic Field Complex.

The cost for the testing is $12,500, but the borough's insurance provider would pay for half of the cost. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at borough hall and is open to the public.

Garwood officials and residents gathered at the borough's Little League Field in December to celebrate the groundbreaking of the long-discussed project.

The $3.2-million project includes a new multi-purpose turf field, field house with a full kitchen and activity space, upgrades and lighting for the existing baseball field, and a bocce court. It will be partially funded with $1.1 million in county and state grants.

Plans for the building of the complex have been underway for more than 10 years. The project wasn't approved without controversy: Several residents attended the council meetings proceeding the complex's final approval to argue that the field and the tax increase necessary to fund it were more than Garwood could afford.
