Bonaccorso said Connell's departure and the retirement of two Captains below him, led the town to initially seek a director of police, but they later decided that Scherb, then a lieutenant, could lead the department and be made chief in the future.

Bonaccorso commended Scherb for quickly adapting to his role as head of the department, tweaking the department's schedules, working with town hall, budgeting and more.
