Clark Police Captain Alan Scherb was formally sworn in as Clark's next police chief at Tuesday night's council meeting.

Scherb was promoted to Captain and has served as the Officer-in-Charge of the department since Chief Denis Connell retired in May 2011.

A crowd of Scherb's family and friends, Clark police officers and chiefs from other Union County towns packed council chambers for the swearing in ceremony.

Bonaccorso announced the promotion at council's first September meeting. Bonaccorso said Connell's departure and the retirement of two Captains below him, led the town to initially seek a director of police, but they later decided that Scherb, then a lieutenant, could lead the department and be made chief in the future.

Bonaccorso commended Scherb for quickly adapting to his role as head of the department, tweaking the department's schedules, working with town hall, budgeting and more.
