Irene Aftermath: Finally, Power Coming to Garwood and Elsewhere

PSE&G will deploy two generators while the Cranford substation is offline.

Relief is coming for those Garwood residents and business owners stuck in the dark since Hurricane Irene hit.

According to Garwood Police Chief Bruce Underhill, PSE&G has deployed two “step-down” generator units in Garwood, as well as others in Westfield and Cranford. The power company will be connecting them to the service line grid to power up the Cranford/Garwood/Westfield grid temporarily until the Cranford substation is back online.

Chief Underhill says this will restore power to the area and will hopefully be accomplished by tonight.

PSE&G is asking that residents conserve their power usage and to limit the use of air conditioning, unplug electronic devices such as televisions and cell phone chargers when not in use, and limit lighting through the weekend, as this is just a temporary fix until the Cranford substation is back up and fully functional.
