Garwood FD Puts Out Garbage Truck Fire

Two garbage trucks next to the Bush Brothers building were fully ablaze.

Two garbage trucks at Bush Brothers Disposal Company on South Avenue in Garwood were fully ablaze around midnight on Thursday. The Garwood Fire Department, with assistance from Scotch Plains crews, put out the fire about 30 minutes after it began.

"It began in the front of one of the trucks, but we're not sure what started it," said Garwood Fire Chief Wayne Frew at the scene.

The two trucks were located side-by-side in the parking lot adjacent to the Bush Brothers Building. The building did not sustain any serious damage.

Residents behind the building on Willow Avenue were evacuated until the fire was placed under control. The Garwood Volunteer First Aid Squad was on hand; no injuries were reported.

Garwood Police Sgt. Sam Rocco said emergency responders were alerted to the fire after multiple 911 calls from residents. Conveniently, the Garwood fire and police stations are located just a few doors on the same block of South Avenue and worked quickly to get the fire under control.

Police closed off South Avenue from Center Street to West Street, but traffic was flowing freely during the rush-hour drive Thursday morning.
