Clark Police Officers Honored for Distinguished Service and Lifesaving

The 2011 Department Awards were presented at Monday nights council meeting.

Ten Clark police officers were awarded for distinguished service and lifesaving at Monday night's council meeting.

Clark Police Captain and Officer-in-Charge Al Scherb presented the following 2011 department awards:

On May 7, 2011, Patrolmen Brian Renda and Joe Teston responded to a residence for an unresponsive 85-year-old male. Upon arrival the officers observed that the man was in cardiac arrest and began two-man CPR. The officers were able to resuscitate the man prior to him being transported to the hospital.

On July 16, 2011, Patrolmen Ken Sarnecki and Marty Venezio responded to a residence on report of an unresponsive female. Upon arrival, the offciers observed her unresponsive and not breathing although she did have a pulse. The officers initiated rescue breathing for approximately eight minutes before medics arrived. The female had regained consciousness and was transported to the hospital breathing on her own.

On Nov. 5, 2011, Patrolmen Thomas Sarnecki and Marty Venezio responded to a report of an unconscious female. Upon arrival, these officers began two-man CPR and the female regained a pulse before being transported to the hospital.

 

The Platoon Award: Lt. James Rapp, Sgt. Vin Concina and Patrolmen John Ehling, Danny Pitts and Brain Renda

On March 8, 2011, headquarters broadcasted an abduction of a 22-year-old male from his residence. Patrolmen Ehling was able to obtain a description of the vehicle and broadcasted to all units. A short time later, Lt. Rapp observed he suspect vehicle and attempted to conduct a felony stop. The suspect attempted to elude apprehension, but with the assistance of Sgt. Concina and Patrolmen Renda and Pitts, officers were able to stop the vehicle and take three suspects into custody without incident.

 

Distinguished Service Award

On Dec. 22, 2010, Det. Kevin Shackleton was assigned to several house burglaries that occurred in Clark. During Shackleton's investigation, he was able to obtain a license plate and leads on several suspects. Shackleton conducted a mobile surveillance of the suspect vehicle from Keyport to Cranford. Once in Cranford, Shackleton observed the suspects commit a burglary to a residence. During the course of the burglary, Shackleton called for assistance and the two suspects were apprehended coming out of the residence.
