Abandoned Suitcase Causes Bomb Scare in Garwood

Garwood Mall was evacuated Thursday afternoon, but nothing was found inside the suitcase.

An abandoned suitcase caused the evacuation of the Garwood Mall on Thursday afternoon. 

Garwood Police received a report of a suspicious item in the parking lot of the shopping center at 300 South Ave at about 2 p.m. 

According to Garwood Police, units responded and found an unattended suitcase in the lot. The Union County Bomb Squad was notified and police evacuated the immediate area including King's, GNC, Jumbo Wash, the Eye Dr. and Rudy's Restaurant.

The Union County Bomb Squad arrived and examined the suitcase with a portable X-ray unit. 

The suitcase was found to be empty and abandoned. No threat was determined.
