Summer Fun for the Whole Family at Garwood Library

Whatever your age, there is lots to do this summer at the borough's emporium of books and culture.

The Garwood Public Library is gearing up for a full summer of events to promote reading and the arts to kids of all ages.

All borough children from pre-reader through grade 8 are invited to join the library's 19th annual Summer Reading Club.  Themed “Dig into Reading”, the program gives kids an opportunity to win prizes by logging in the amount of time they read. Calendar logs and instructions are available at the library's Circulation Desk.

Crafts are the focus of hands-on events for kids who have completed 2nd grade. These creativity-promoting crafting sessions will be held on Tuesdays from July 2 through Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. Registration is required as space is limited to 20 youngsters.

It's lights, camera, action at 2 p.m. July 11 and 25 and Aug. 1, all Thursdays, when the library offers movies for kids. All children are allowed, however, any child under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Science education gets a boost Thursday, July 18, at 2 p.m., when the Garwood Library offers Snakes 'n Scales' presentation of “It Came from Beneath the Earth,” a program that explores reptiles, amphibians, spiders (and some surprise creatures) as kids learn about the problems animals face and how potentially to solve them. Registration is required for this event, with preference given to Garwood residents.

On Wednesday, July 31, at 7 p.m. prestidigitation takes center stage when magician Mark Zacharia presents “Murder, Mystery, and Magic,” a program for grown-up kids. According to library staff, Zacharia has performed for kids in previous shows at the Garwood Library; now, it's the adults' turn to be astounded. Registration is required for this performance.

To register for any or all of these events, visit the library in person, call TK or check out the library’s interactive calendar page on the Web.

The Garwood Public Library is located at the corner of Walnut Street and Third Avenue, behind the Lincoln School complex.  Summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday hours will resume after Labor Day.
