Diamonds in the Rough: Three Weeks Done and It’s Been Fun, Fun, Fun

This column is the eyes and ears of all that is happening in the world of the Clark Girls Softball League

Greetings from the rough...

The Clark Girls Softball League (CGSB) is in full swing! Divisional play on all levels is fun, friendly and spirited. Many of the girls live close to one another, share similar off field interests and even attend the same schools, which all makes for a natural and seamless team bonding experience, but when they step on the field… it is down to business and of course fun.

Here is a look into what has been happening around the league.

Leading the way is the Major Division. With three weeks in the books, Diverse Development tops the standings. However, East Coast Conditioning, Clark Fire Department, UNICO, and Paper Chase are in close pursuit and I am sure we will see a bottleneck for the top stop on a weekly basis given the high-level of skill displayed at each game.

The Minor Division continues to shine every game. The girls play at an advance level and anyone who has seen one of their games would agree with me. The division leader is Clark PBA, closely followed by Diverse Development, Dufek & Migliaro, Molly Maguire’s, T's 4 U and Bistro 1051, respectively.

The Pee-Wee Division is nothing less than sensational. The girls are eager play and put into action their growing skill and play. Standings in this division are not recorded, but that does not mean the games are not spirited. Live pitching and fast action play makes for an exciting element to each game.

The Instructional Division continues to be the cornerstone for fun and play for first and second year players. From my duel role as the manager of the Dairy Queen team and a parent, it is such an amazing feeling seeing how well the girls are doing and how far they have come from the winter months of indoor practice. I am sure my colleagues on the other side of the diamond can attest to this.

We have already completed one full rotation, meaning all the teams have played each other at least once, and you can clearly see the level of play and enjoyment has risen. It is great to see each girl having fun and truly embracing the spirit and essence of the game… the way softball is meant to be played. And, it’s great to see the managers, coaches and team moms relishing in the experience too. The sidelines continued to be filled with cheering parents, siblings and those who enjoy watching a few great innings of instructional play.

It would be an injustice if I did not shine a well-deserved spotlight on the league’s concession pavilion. Every game, the concession stand is manned with team volunteers, who make-up the tireless workforce behind the success of this facility. The pavilion has evolved into the “place to be” for some great conversation, camaraderie and of course for a hot dog with the works! Be sure to come-by and say ‘thank you’ to the volunteers the next time you visit the CGSB complex.

Until next time… see you in the rough.
