Deck the House: Clark's Holiday Decorating Contest

1) Untangle the strands. 2) Check every bulb. 3) Pray.

The lights are shining in Clark. The township's third annual Holiday House Decorating Contest is underway.

Participation in the contest has grown rapidly. "It's becoming a family tradition in Clark," explains Ralph Bernardo, Recreation Director. "We started with about 20 homes participating in 2008. Last year we had over 40 homes. This year we're hoping for even more. I encourage everyone to get involved whether it's decorating and entering your home in the contest or driving around, viewing the homes and voting for your choices."

It's easy to enter your house in the contest. Just pick up a registration form, complete it and return it to the Recreation Department no later than December 10. Forms are available in Room 18 in town hall, at the Recreation Center and in the library. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: most outrageous house, most traditional house, and all-around favorite house.

Mike Bruno and his family are two-time winners in the most outrageous house category. Bruno says Christmas is his favorite time of year. He started decorating when his first child was born 16 years ago. Over the years his outdoor display has grown to the point where people come by just to see it. When the contest started, it seemed natural to enter. "It's really about giving at this time of year," Bruno says. "The display is my way of giving something back to everyone, especially the kids. I like seeing their faces light up."

Terri Mazzarella and her family were some of the first participants and won the traditional category in 2008. "When the idea of the holiday decorating contest was first introduced, I jumped at the chance to participate," Mazzarella says. "As a family, we enjoy decorating both inside and out. I encourage residents to participate and take this opportunity to play a part in Clark's holiday tradition."
