Celebrating Art in Summit

Summit Public Art is presenting a gala at 6:30 p.m. June 8 at 70 Hillcrest Avenue to celebrate local artists and recognize arts advocates Anne Avery Poyner and Alex Gibney.

The honorees, Anne Poyner and Alex Gibney, are Summit residents. Poyner, the theatre Arts Director and Forensics Coach at Summit High School, has been directing award-winning student productions for almost a decade. The sell-out performances, both dramatic and musical, have been recognized each year with multiple Rising Star nominations and awards from the Paper Mill Playhouse.

Gibney, a noted filmmaker, directed the 2008 Oscar-winning film “Taxi to the Dark Side” and the 2006 Oscar-nominated “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.” Other credits as director include “Casino Jack and the United States of Money” and “Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.” Gibney has also produced music films, including “Jimi Hendrix and the Blues” (director) and “Martin Scorsese Presents ‘The Blues’” (producer), an eight-film documentary series.

In 2010-2011, Gibney released several films as director, including “My Trip to Al-Qaeda,” based on the one-man play by Lawrence Wright, and “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer.” He also recently finished a film for ESPN called “Catching Hell” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. In addition to the Oscar, Mr. Gibney has received numerous other awards, including the Grammy, multiple Emmys, the Peabody Award, and the DuPont-Columbia Award for Broadcast Journalism.

The awards to be presented to the honorees are original pieces being designed and fabricated by the glass blower artists at GlassRoots in Newark. For more information or to RSVP, visit Summit Public Art at http://arts.cityofsummit.org or email summitarts@cityofsummit.org.

NJ Jobs on the Rise

The number of jobs in New Jersey expanded for the third consecutive month in April — increasing by 14,000 jobs — with the vast majority of the gain in the private sector, reports the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.   Employment in the Garden State has now increased by 32,000 jobs since January of this year, the department said in a news release.

The state’s unemployment rate in April remained at 9.3 percent, as the overall workforce continued to grow with previously discouraged workers reentering the labor market, as is expected early in an economic recovery. The U.S. unemployment rate increased from 8.8 to 9.0 percent during April, according to the release.

In April, the job growth leader was the trade, transportation, and utilities industry supersector which added 8,300 jobs. Industries that recorded job loss included information (-1,700), financial activities (-1,100), professional and business services (-1,000), and other services (-500). The loss in information was mainly a result of contraction in the telecommunications component while the drop in financial activities occurred mostly in the real estate segment, according to the release.
