St. Anne's School Demolished as Senior Housing Complex Goes Up in Garwood

Construction for a new senior housing complex is well underway at the former St. Anne's School property in Garwood. 

The Village at Garwood, a three-story complex for seniors, will feature on-site parking, laundry facilities, and a recreation room. 

Those involved in the project celebrated at a recent groundbreaking ceremony.

"The Village at Garwood will address the need in central Union County for people 62 and older to “age in place” among family and friends," said Karen Simon, Executive Director of Westfield Senior Housing, which will operate the Village at Garwood facility.  "Our mission is to provide safe, affordable housing and a wide variety of services that enable seniors to remain in their homes as long as possible."

The Village at Garwood is funded by a Federal Home Loan grant provided through Two River Community Bank of Westfield, the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 202 program, Low Income Housing Tax Credits, a New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency construction loan, and the Westfield Senior Citizens Housing Corp.

"When it opens, this facility will extend the independence of senior citizens through the provision of comfortable, affordable housing in conjunction with social and recreational activities," said Neil Sullivan, Chairman of Westfield Senior Housing.  "We are very much looking forward to the opening of this new facility in early 2015 and thank the generous funders who are helping to make this vision a reality."

The architectural design is done by Steven S. Cohen Architects, and the builder is Del-Sano Contracting Corp.  The opening of the facility is planned for the first quarter of 2015.

Westfield Senior Citizens Housing Corporation extends the independence of senior citizens through the provision of comfortable, affordable housing in conjunction with social and recreational activities.  The organization offers congregate services, including meals, personal assistance, medication assistance, and housekeeping support to the frail elderly.
