Addams Family House for Sale in Westfield

Open house to be held at cartoonist's home on Sunday.

It’s not creepy or kooky, mysterious or spooky, or all together ooky, but it’s the Addams Family house.

The boyhood home of cartoonist Charles Addams at 522 Elm Street is for sale and an open house will be held on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The century old home was where Addams started conceiving the idea for his legendary cartoon, which spawned television shows and a Broadway musical.

According to marketing materials prepared by Jayne Bernstein of Coldwell Banker, the listing agent for the home, the house contains six bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. The house is three stories with a butler’s pantry and wood burning fireplaces and hardwood floors, along with a covered front porch.

Addams, who died in 1988, was the son of Charles and Grace Addams. He was also a distant cousins of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams and social activist Jane Addams.

There has been an on-going movement to remember the work and life of Addams in Westfield. This includes the forming of a Charles Addams group and the dedication of a , which has been used as artwork in town. The sign, which was created by WHS students, includes some of Addam’s iconic images.

During the open house, an actress portraying Morticia Addams will be on hand.
