UNITEDHEALTHCARE/WESTFIELD AREA Y HEALTH BEE A BIG SUCCESS

The Westfield Area Y hosted the fifth annual UnitedHealthcare Health Bee on April 2nd at the Robert and Virginia Bauer Branch in Westfield. Seventh grade students from  eight middle schools exercised with their brain instead of their muscles in Jeopardy-style rounds of competition. The students used their quick thinking skills in this test of health and wellness knowledge.

The event featured a panel of judges, parents and students from Edison and Roosevelt Intermediate schools in Westfield, Lincoln School in Garwood, Hillside Avenue, Orange Avenue and St. Michael’s Schools from Cranford, Deerfield School in Mountainside and the Terence C. Reilly School in Elizabeth. Participants answered questions in the categories of General Health and Science, Physical Fitness and Food and Nutrition.

This year’s 1st Place winner was the “Orange Crush” from Orange Avenue School in Cranford.  They were the awarded $1,000 from UnitedHealthcare for their school.   The “Smarticle Particles” from Lincoln School in Garwood were the proud 2nd Place winners and received $500 from UnitedHealthcare and “The Healthy Bees” from St. Michael’s School in Cranford was awarded $250 for having the most team spirit.

“If we are going to truly fight the obesity epidemic in this country, these are the type of things we need to do.  We need to make learning about health and nutrition fun for students.  The fifth annual UnitedHealthcare Health Bee was a great example of how that can be done.  Thanks to all who participated and supported our joint efforts towards this ongoing epidemic,” states Greg Hatzisavvas, Westfield Area Y Senior Director of Wellness and Member Engagement.
