North Jersey Chapter of One Million Moms For Gun Control Partners With Mayor Healy to Hold Rally in NJ
JERSEY CITY -- Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy and representatives of the North Jersey Chapter of One Million Moms For Gun Control announced today plans for a New Jersey rally to advocate for tougher national and state gun control laws at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Lincoln Park in Jersey City, West Side and Belmont Avenues.
Born in the wake of the devastating Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the national grassroots organization, One Million Moms For Gun Control, has a mission of advocating for national and state action such as banning assault weapons and ammunition magazines of more than 10 rounds, requiring background checks for all gun purchasers, reporting the sale of large quantities of ammunition to the ATF, and limiting the scope of concealed weapons laws at the state level.
A North Jersey chapter of the organization has been formed by two moms who, like other mothers around the nation, are horrified and heartbroken by the events in Newtown, CT. and who have banded together to fight for tougher
gun control measures at the national level.
On January 26th, the national organization of One Million Moms For Gun Control will hold a march in the nation’s capital to demand action. To coincide with the march, local chapters are holding rallies aroundthe country.
“We have been advocating for a federal cure for this federal plague of gun violence for years,” said Mayor Healy. “While New Jersey is often used as a model for common sense gun legislation, we know that without federal action, we will continue to lose countless lives to gun violence. We need to have our voices heard, so that the NRA and those federal legislators who capitulate to them, will know we are just as strong as the gun lobby.”
In addition to Mayor Healy, Congressman Frank Pallone (D-6th) and State Senators Lorretta Weinberg (D-37) and Ray Lesniak (D-20) are scheduled to speak at the rally and invitations are pending with several other elected officials.
“One Million Moms for Gun Control NJ has been overwhelmed by the response of our New Jersey elected officials, especially Mayor Healy’s office,” said Mandi Perlmutter, organizer of One Million Moms for Gun Control - NJ./North Chapter. “As we rally together, we want to send a powerful message to Washington that we will not back down. We demand reform.”
