Recognized as a natural wonder in the Colonial days, and recently designated a National Park, The Great Falls of the Passaic River powered the factories of America’s first great industrial city throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This program presented on Monday, June 4th, at 1 pm is offered by Kevin Woyce who is an author, photographer and lecturer. His regional history books include Jersey Shore History and Facts: Hudson River Lighthouses and &History: New Jersey State Parks: History and Facts: and Liberty: the Amazing Story of America’s Favorite Statue. Back by popular demand, Woyce has presented a number of his lectures at the Springfield Library in the past.
Woyce will explain the history of the falls and the industries that grew up around them, from locomotive building to silk weaving. He will also introduce some of the colorful personalities who shaped that history, including founding father Alexander Hamilton, who first suggested harnessing the falls in 1791: the industrious Colt family; and silk merchant Catholina Lambert, who once watched over his factories from a mountainside castle.
The admission is free and open to all, having been made possible by the Friends of the Springfield Free Public Library.
The Springfield Free Public Library is located at 66 Mountain Avenue, Springfield. For additional information, call 973-376-4930.
