Two Taken to Hospital After Head-On Collision on Central Avenue
Police closed Central Avenue between Pearl Street and Cedar Street in Westfield near the Clark border.
Two people were transported to area hospitals following a head-on collission on Central Avenue on Monday afternoon.
Slightly before 3:30 p.m., at the intersection of Central Avenue and Hardwick Avenue, a silver Chrysler Town and Country minivan traveling southeast on Central Avenue collided with a westbound white Ford Focus for Amco Pest Services – a New Jersey exterminating company based in Wall Township. The Focus appeared to have crossed the double yellow line, with both cars appearing on a diaganol following the crash.
No fatalities were reported. The male driver of the Focus was transported to University Hospital in Newark, the region's main trauma center, with what appeared to emergency officials at the scene as lacerations. The female driver of the minivan was transported to the Overlook Hospital in Summit with less serious injuries.
The damage sustained by both vehicles, however, suggests the severity of the crash. The driver-side door of the Focus was twisted to the front of the vehicle, and the roof was torn-off by emergency workers. The air bags in both vehicles also deployed.
No cause of the crash has been determined with the accident remaining under investigation by the police department's traffic bureau.
Both vehicles sustained extensive front end damage, with damage appearing more severe on the Focus. The driver-side door of the Focus was twisted to the front of the vehicle, and the roof was torn-off by emergency workers to get the driver out. Air bags depoloyed in both vehicles.
Firefighters were spreading material on the roadway to soak up car fluids, along with cautioning onlookers from getting too close to the Focus, which contained exterminating chemicals.
At least three apparatus from the Westfield Fire Department responded to the scene, along withWestfield police, the Westfield Rescue Squad and the Clark Rescue Squad. Police closed Central Avenue between Pearl Street and Cedar Street, sending traffic on to side streets.
Both cars were placed on flatbed trucks and transported from the scene.
