POLL: Is It Fair To Judge Romney Based On His High School Behavior?

Former classmates of Mitt Romney have come forward with accounts that portray him as a high school bully, but we're wondering if you think it's fair to judge him on his alleged bad behavior.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!’’

Mitt Romney said that to his high school classmates about a boy, John Lauber, with bleached blonde bangs, according to a story in the Boston Globe.

A few days after that statement, he allegedly "led a group of boys out of his dorm room at Cranbrook School and into Lauber’s, where the group tackled him and held him down. Romney cut his hair with scissors as a teary-eyed Lauber screamed for help."

Another highlight of his possible wrongdoing includes saying "Atta girl" every time a particular student that some perceived as effeminate or gay raised his hand.

Romney made a general apology, quoted from the Globe as, "If there was anything I said that was offensive to someone, I certainly am sorry about that."

He also told Fox New's Brian Kilmeade that “I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school and some may have gone too far. And for that I apologize" according to a Boston Herald article, but Romney didn't address any particular incident in either apology.

What do you think about our former Governor's past?  If these things are true, should they affect whether or not he becomes President, or are high school issues ridiculous to consider when judging an adult's fitness for a particular political office?  Vote in our poll and leave a comment with your thoughts.

  • Is it fair to judge Mitt Romney on his alleged high school misbehavior?

    • No, it's not fair to judge him. Who you are at 17 isn't who you are at 65.

    • Yes, it is fair to judge him. I don't want a president who was a bully in high school, even if he says he changed his ways.

This article missed the point. The problem isn't that he was a bully in high school. It's that, half a century later, he is incapable of owning up to it.

I believe the point is Ryan Wenzel, that if the Press is going to waste time diverting from the Economy, than why not give equal time to Obama.

Obama was a Drug User and a Drug Dealer and for years into his twenties!!

He tells it all in his own words in his autobiography, "Dreams From My Father", at your local Library.

He wrote it way back when he needed money and did not even have a thought of running for president.

But the Press has given him a complete pass.

Where is the Press on this ?????

Drug Dealing is a CRIME.

Seems very silly to me... Obama admitted in his book to smoking pot, drinking, skipping school and having a fight with a girl in high school... why no press coverage?... the Romney thing is just another distraction to divert attention from the only real issue come November... the economy and who has the experience to help it recover. That would be Romney; Obama is a nice guy with no experience, let's vote for a real leader this time.

No experience? Try 3.5 years as President!

The problem with Mittens' bullying is that it is part of a larger pattern of picking on the weak. Holding down a kid and cutting off his hair. Enjoying being able to fire people. Running a large financial firm and breaking up companies, throwing thousands of people out of work while he raked in the profits.

I don't think it's fair to judge someone for something they did at 17, but Romney continues to show that he's still a big bully by supporting BIG CORPORATIONS!

You want to talk about crime? Hiding money overseas is a crime. America itself is a criminal. Let's not be all hypocritical . How much of you did drugs ? I don't like people who cast the first stone and are riddled with sin and criminal activity but you just didn't get caught!

People tend to lose perspective by viewing past events through today's moral filter. If you grew up in the 60's and 70's you probably tried pot. As for bullying - things were brutal by today's standards, with name calling and fist fights a daily event in the school where I grew up (Staten Island 40 years ago).

I think the media is gettting too carried away trying to find dirt. (Do we know if either candidate ate their vegetables in grammar school?)

Can we get the focus back on jobs, the deficit, the environment..........?
