Incumbents Dominate Senate, Assembly Races in 21st District
Unofficial results as of 11 p.m. Tuesday show support for existing leadership.
Across New Jersey, all 120 seats all up for grabs — 80 in the state Assembly and all 40 in the Senate.
In the 21st District, encompassing Berkeley Heights, Cranford, Garwood, Mountainside, New Providence, Springfield, Summit and Westfield, voters returned all the incumbents to office.
No surprises developed Tuesday as Republican State Senator Tom Kean Jr. nearly doubled the votes garnered by his opponent, Democrat Paul Swanicke. According to unofficial results relesed by Union County, Kean earned 18,239 votes, or 66 percent, to Swanicke's 9,518 or 34 percent.
Kean, who serves on the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committees, has devoted his career to pushing for ethics reform in the state and has backed legislation to cut property taxes, streamline government, promote education and protect the environment.
He did not return a call for comment late Tuesday night.
In the 21st District Assembly race, incumbents Nancy Munoz and Jon Bramnick received support for a return to office.
For Summit resident Munoz, Tusday's win was her first election victory with 16,621 votes or 30.87 percent, according to unofficial Union County results. She took over for her husband, Assemblyman Eriz Munoz, who died after suffering a ruptured aortic aneurysm on March 30, 2009. Munoz received the backing from the Union County GOP and took over a month later.
Jon Bramnick, who's been in the Assembly since 2003, easily earned his re-election, amassing 16,516 votes, or 30.67 percent.
Neither Munoz nor Bramnick could be reached for comment Tuesday night.
