That sounds like a great project to benefit the youth of Garwood! As a former resident of Garwood and one of the children of James V. Guerriero (whom the field is memorialized to) I am proud to see that the field will be undergoing a long overdue upgrade. I played all of my Garwood Little League games at this field and I have lifelong memories of playing here and growing up in Garwood. At one time this field used to be one of the nicest fields in the entire state of New Jersey! I'm hoping it becomes that again and it sure sounds it. I only wish that once in a while, when stories are being written about the James V. Guerriero Memorial Field, that my father's name would be mentioned so as to give him the respect he deserves for having helped developed the Garwood Little League over the years. Good luck with the project and to all those who will benefit from it!

This is sincerely an honor. It would be a great gesture from the mayor to invite James V. Guerriero's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to this event to remember his dedication to the Garwood Baseball Organization.

If people volunteer to get recongnized, they are doing it for the wrong reasons

James V. Guerriero's legacy had a good 60+ year run. It's probably time for a new name. Most of the Guerriero family have bailed out of Garwood and no one knows who James V was anymore. How about just naming it Garwood Athletic Field Complex, so all Garwood residents can take pride in it, not just one family.

Lisa S....there are still plenty of Guerrieros that not only still live in Garwood, but have children who now play at that field....double check your facts about what Guerrieros are still in Garwood...You should also know that our Grandmother Edith (who was at EVERY SINGLE OPENING DAY at that field until probably a year before she passed) had one last wish on her bucket list....for a new sign to be put up and for her to see it be put up....her Grandchildren made that wish a reality a few years ago...she's been gone 6 years now and being one of her many Grandchildren your comments are insensitive and idiotic, you can't take pride in a field my grandfather helped build probably for your kids if you had any and ALL GARWOOD CHILDREN to play on as well just because it's memorialized to HIM???...IT ISN'T A FIELD FOR THE GUERRIEROS TO PLAY ON....YOU FIND OUT HOW MANY GARWOOD CHILDREN IN THE 60 PLUS YEARS HAVE PLAYED ON THAT FIELD, I CAN GUARANTEE YOU IT'S MORE THAN GUERREIROS....2 cents.....my grandfather (although I never got to meet him) didn't build this field for recognition...he built it so that the kids of Garwood could have a place to go, play a sport he loved, and have a place that was safe and for all to share....at John, thank YOU.....this is exactly what my Grandfather was doing, along with a lot of other fine people in Garwood. May both of my grandparents rest in peace knowing that they did something as wonderful as they did for their community.

All of our forefathers who helped organize and get youth sports of the ground, deserve to be commended. If he truly did this for the kids in town, instead of personal recognition, I would think he wouldn't care if the field was renamed..............

She is a parishioner at St Anne's Church that was built by her Grandfather. You are missing the point- CGO, it's about preserving history. why does eveyone get butt hurt because it will be a memorial park? the hasty comments are indeed not residents for more than the years or decendents of those who founded garwood (they don t know any Guerrerios?).why not then change the name of the damn schools to garwood middle school.what did lincoln do for our school? get over it please. the Guerrerios are not vain people...but it has been for a long many years the Guerrios. go to any garwood history and you ll see the names of people who started, ran, raised money for, volunteered, and gave passion and patriotism for the town..the feld is indeed worthy of the late Guerrerio, and for you new residents..just keep the town going..it used to be friendly and everybody knew everyone..and supported each other..w/ respect..if you do alot for garwood and want your name posted because you want the recognition...keep traditions going..Guerrerio is a legendary name..i m not trying to puff them up but i will tell you for sure everyone of them was known for being a fantastic athelete, teacher, supporter, etc...for GENERATIONS... Mr Guerrerio is the founder of the field.the Guerrerios did more for the kids back in the day by having that field errected than nintendo did for gamers today.please..as a former resident and my father build homes in garwood, allow this to be a good day..praise others for good things don t try to take it away because you don t feel recognised..i m sure you are all wonderful supporters of garwood..

Aahhh , the voice of reason and true facts. Thank you Cindi Shimkus- another long time Garwood resident and a family who was always involved with the kids, volunteering a lot of their time as well. Say hi to your sisters for me!!

will do..our grandparents go way back in Garwood too...mine worked in the old factories that i believe are gone now and granma bowled with one of your family members....all these garwood one a be's have not a clue ...but do we care? they are jealous, low self esteemed people who feel hurt by those with recognition

This conversation is all for naught. According to the borough clerk, the James Guerriero name is not staying. Since there are now several plaques at the field, placed over the years to memorialize former coaches and contributors, the new field will simply be "Memorial Field". That seems to solve the situation nicely.

I feel the name of the baseball field should remane the same. Over the decades there have been certain men and women who contributed to upkeeping the premises and running Baseball league. One of those men from my generation was Mr. Destefanis (I hope my spelling is correct and I hope his name gets memorialized when the AFC is completed!!!

I can't beleve some of the comments here. I was born and raised in this town, and I knew Mr. Guerriero and he was one of the finest gentlemen that I know. When I was here, comments such as those above would never have appeared here

Please, just everyone settle down. I'm only a resident but have been following this issue and been close to it for the last 15 years. We are all invited to the groundbreaking and nobody should show up aggravated. The anonymous posters are just blowing smoke for some reason. Thats what anonymity can do. The plaques and momuments will remain at the field when its done. They may be removed for the time during construction so they dont get damaged but they will be restored for the posterity of those in the past that gave their time to the youth and atletics of Garwood. Its not going to end up with just some generic name as "rec complex" or "athletic field". Maybe it will be referred that way out in the streets but the plaques will remain. The history of Garwood is rich and much should be saved to remind us. Unfortunatley the Lions Gazebo and the existing Homenik dedicated field house will be demolished. It is sad. But the names and plaques will still be at the field. And BTW, yes there are Guerrieros still here in GW! I personally am proud to know two of them. One just happens to be a Garwood board of Ed member for the last 7 years. And her mother was on the board of health for ages, and whe recently stepped down possibly due to health. The name is synonymous with volunteerism.

It is tragic that people neglect the memories of the founders of one of the best

Way too expensive an undertaking at a time when many don't have jobs or are underemployed and in foreclosure or property values are underwater. I can't wait to see the hit on our property taxes which are already overtaxed. Was an analysis done as to the benefit versus the cost? What percentage of property owners will have a direct benefit from this? Tax and spend is alive and well in Garwood.
