Center Street Underpass 50-Year Anniversary Celebrated in Garwood

The committee is also looking for any of the original children who participated in the first walk under the underpass in 1963.

On May 25, Garwood celebrated the re-dedication of the borough's Center Street underpass.

The re-dedication commemorated the 50-year anniversary of the grand opening of the underpass in May, 1963. The civil works project was taken on to alleviate the increase of train/traffic accidents at the existing grade crossing and to reduce the stress of having the south side school children cross the tracks on their way to school on the north side of the Borough.

The Garwood Historical Committee sponsored the event and it was funded by the borough's Celebrations Committee. The event included the unveiling of the rock and commemorative plaque, and a re-enactment of the ribbon cutting and the “children’s walk” under the underpass 50 years ago. Attendees included former Mayor George Casabona, who cut the ribbon at the original opening of the underpass. The Historical Committee also noted they'd like to thank Ann Kettles, the daughter of Mayor Casabona, who two years ago came in front of council to note that the 50th anniversary of the opening of the underpass was coming up and that celebrating would be a great honor for her father, the oldest of the living mayors of Garwood.
