Delicious Delis Abound in Union County

Our Readers' Choice polls this week revealed a smorgasbord of places to find delicious sandwiches, coffee and — sometimes — breakfast all day long.

In a world divided between cheap, processed fast food and pricey gourmet dining, delicatessens offer an old-school option for fresh quality eats prepared quickly, affordably and deliciously.

It's a down-to-earth way to dine that abounds in Union County.

In Springfield, locals flock to Campus Sub Shop II which has been a fixture on Morris Ave. for over 25 years. They come for the coffee, the all-day breakfast (best taylor ham eggs and cheese in the area!) and the quality cold cuts.

In Westfield, the choice cuts are at Hershey's where the two most popular subs are the Italian and the Trinidad, which features Swiss cheese, roast beef, turkey, lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing. The deli also offers breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, chicken fingers, onion rings, french fries, cole slaw, macaroni salad, chips and beverages.

DiCosmo's in Clark is adored for its Italian delicacies, including homemade sausage and mozzarella. At lunch time, regulars line up daily for freshly made subs, sandwiches and salads. Display cases are full of store-prepared dishes like eggplant rollatini, meatballs, chicken cutlets and sausage and peppers.

Al's Prime Meats is Garwood's favorite deli. Owned and operated by the Rimondi family for more than 20 years, Al Rimondi is proud of the personal attention he gives each of his customers at this family-owned store. Besides a variety of butcher-quality meats, cold cuts and salads, Al's customers can sit down for a slice of pizza in the dining area. Al's also provides catering for all occasions.

Alfredo's Italian American Deli & Caterers in Scotch Plains also is beloved for its Italian specialties as well as its banquet hall and catering capabilities.

In New Providence, Tables for 2 Panini Cafe ran away with the contest for best deli, while The Sub Zone just edged out Goodman's Restaurant & Deli in Berkeley Heights. Mountainside Delicatessen clinched the vote in Mountainside with 100 percent of the vote. Read more about these delicious delis here.

At Towne Deli in Summit, the Hilltopper sandwich — comprised of a chicken cutlet, bacon, barbeque sauce and melted pepper jack cheese on a sub roll — is a fan fave that just may have put Towne Deli over the top with voters.

Mr. J's Deli knows how to please the palates of Cranford possibly because owner John Taggart grew up in town. Besides a delicious array of deli standards, Mr. J's offers unique interior decor and outdoor seating.

But most of all, it's the great tastes delivered with little fuss and at reasonable prices that keeps 'em coming back — to Mr. J's and all these Union County favorites.
